Description

This is a mid-19th century farmhouse, likely incorporating older elements. It is an asymmetrical, roughly T-shaped building of two storeys. The front is constructed of squared and coursed stugged ashlar, with raised margins, while the sides and rear are of rubble.

The south elevation displays an L-plan layout, with a single-bay wing projecting to the west and connecting to a three-bay east range. A doorway is located to the left of the east range, featuring heavily moulded architraves. A canted window with a cornice and blocking course is on the right side at ground level. Three windows are present at the first floor; gabled dormerheads with finials break the eaves. An advanced wing to the left of the doorway features a tripartite window at ground level and a single window at the first floor, both with hoodmoulds. A blind slit window is set within the gable head.

The west elevation has two first-floor windows, each with an ashlar gabled dormerhead and a finial.

A further wing is located in the re-entrant angle of the T-plan at the rear, along with lean-to, single-storey outbuildings.

The south-facing windows are plate glass sash and case windows, while the rear windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates and features straight skews with bracketed skewputts. Ashlar coped end and wallhead stacks are topped with cornices and decorative cans.

Extensive ashlar-coped garden walls enclose the property, punctuated by square gatepiers and a doorway to the east, featuring an ashlar hoodmould and pediment. Steps with barley-sugar twist iron railings lead down from the doorway.

The former owner, J Douglas of Athelstaneford Mains, was known for breeding shorthorn cattle, and the farmhouse and associated buildings were likely a result of his success. The garden includes unusual urns decorated with cattle heads and an elaborate scalloped stone fountain with dolphins.
