Description
Colonel Gardiner's Monument in Prestonpans is a grey ashlar structure created by sculptor Archibald Ritchie in 1853, which he signed and dated. The monument consists of a base, pedestal, and obelisk, and is located to the north of Bankton House. The base features a rock-worked course and has a sleepy lion in a couchant position at each of the four angle buttresses, with two lions in alternating poses. The pedestal is corniced and channelled, with moulded and inscribed panels on each face.
