Description

Bankton House, located on Johnnie Cope's Road in Prestonpans, dates from around 1700 and is a two-storey mansion with a basement and double attic, featuring five bays in a classical style. The building was gutted by fire in 1966 and previously had single-storey pavilion additions on the east and west sides. It is constructed from harled sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has chamfered reveals, a base course, and a moulded cornice with tie-plates.

The north and south elevations are identical, each displaying regular fenestration across all bays on each floor, with small windows in the basement. At the center of each elevation is a pedimented doorway, which has a bead and hollow surround, narrowly lugged, and a pulvinated frieze that reaches the cill of the first-floor window. Stone stairs lead to each door, with the north elevation's stairs oversailing the basement, which formerly had railings. The center bay features a shaped gabled dormer with scrolled skewputts and an oval oculus, with an additional oculus flanking the door on the south elevation to the left.

The east and west elevations have a shaped gablehead that is almost completely decayed as of 1989, retaining scrolled skewputts. Each has a center window on the first and second floors, though the first-floor window is blinded. There is an off-center basement door and evidence of the former pavilions.

The building once had a 12-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows but is currently roofless and lacks floors. Sandstone rubble retaining walls are present adjoining the east and west sides of the south elevation.
