Description

Barshaw House, located at 215 Glasgow Road in Paisley, is a late 18th century structure that was significantly rebuilt around 1880. This substantial mansion features 2 and 3 storeys, with a basement and attic, and is constructed from ashlar sandstone, which shows signs of weathering. The building has a channelled and battered base course, sections of dividing cornice, an eaves band, and a deep cornice, along with stone mullions.

On the southeast elevation, the house presents an asymmetrical 7-bay facade. The central section includes three lower bays that are regularly fenestrated and balustraded, likely part of the original house. Flanking these are advanced bays, with a prominent three-stage pedimented entrance tower located in the penultimate left bay. The entrance features a doorway on the return to the centre, which is approached by steps and has a consoled corniced canopy. The first and second stages of the tower have bipartite windows, while the third stage has a tripartite window. The outer left bay showcases a broad, full-height 7-light canted window arranged in a 2-3-2 pattern. The penultimate right bay is a 3-storey structure that is also advanced and pedimented, featuring a full-height canted window that is squared off at the second storey with a tripartite window. To the outer right, there is a recessed 2-storey bay with a ground-level door flanked by lights, linked by a console-bracketed cornice, and a single window at the first floor.

The east elevation includes a low 2-storey projection at the centre, which has five closely grouped windows on each floor and a half-pitched roof. The west elevation features a projecting full-height window bay on the outer left, with tripartite windows on each floor. There are bipartite windows on each floor of the bay to the left of centre, and a later addition with a fire escape in the bay to the right of centre. A window has been altered to serve as a door with ramp access, and there is a bipartite window to the outer right.

The windows are timber plate glass sash and case, though most are blocked for protection as of 1997. The roof is covered with grey slate and features box dormers. The interior was not seen during the 1997 assessment.
