South Gate-Lodge, Bielside

The South Gate Lodge at Bielside is a single-storey gate lodge built in the later 19th century, constructed from polychrome brick. The west elevation features a central four-light canted bay with a base and cill course, flanked on the right by a narrow doorway that has a fanlight and a boarded door. There is a lean-to structure attached to the south. The windows are currently blocked as of 1987. The building has a piend slate roof with lead flashings and a polygonal piend on the canted bay, along with moulded coping on the cross-plan stack. A decorative cast-iron lamp bracket and finial add to its charm.

The gatepiers and quadrants consist of polygonal ashlar gatepiers leading to the driveway and a pedestrian gate on the right, featuring raised bases and moulded caps that originally had ball finials, although only one remains. The main gates are boarded and have decorative hinged brackets. The quadrants are made of ashlar-coped red brick, with additional similarly detailed structures along the eastern drive.
