Sherriff Works, West Barns, Dunbar

Sherriff Works, located in West Barns, Dunbar, is an engineering works built around 1878. It is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan, measuring 200 feet by 40 feet, featuring a projecting power house and stalk. The building is constructed of brick with contrasting colour dressings, and the windows are positioned under the eaves.

On the east elevation, the engine house is set off-centre to the left and has been altered to serve as a shop. It features a brick base course supported by cast-iron columns and glazing, with a doorway on the northern return. To the right, there are eight bays, with a doorway located in the penultimate bay.

The west elevation has 18 regularly spaced windows, while the north and south elevations each have four windows arranged similarly.

The stalk is a tapering square section brick shaft that includes contrasting quoins, a neck band, and square coping made of eight brick courses. It stands 50 feet high and is situated on the northern pitch of the power house. The stalk features overlapping glazing between cast-iron uprights and has four-pane sash and case windows at the northern end, which were formerly office windows. The roof is covered with corrugated iron and includes a weathervane.

Inside, the steam engine has been removed, but the boiler remains in place from 1987. The open roof features an unusual truss form, and the walls are painted brick.
