Description
The engine house and associated buildings in Towednack date back to 1874, marked by a datestone and the initials SP. Constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings, the building features round brick arches with granite keystones and brick hoodmoulds above the openings. The original two-stage chimney has had its upper stage removed.
The engine house has a rectangular plan, with a thicker bob wall on the north side and a round chimney at the southeast corner. The boiler house wall runs parallel to the right-hand wall. The former pumping machinery, along with later winding machinery, as well as the floors and roof structure, have been removed.
The exterior consists of three storeys above a basement plinth. There is a central doorway in the dressed granite north bob wall. The rear gable wall includes a large ground floor doorway and a window opening on each floor above. The left-hand wall has two ground floor windows and one window in the middle of each floor above, although the first-floor opening is blocked. The right-hand wall has blocked openings on the ground and first floors. The central second floor opening and two other second floor openings retain their original iron windows with fanlight heads.
Inside, there is evidence of a later inclined floor that was inserted.
