Description

The Engine Inn is a public house dating from the 18th century, which was remodelled in the 19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and features mostly slurried scantle slate roofs, with asbestos slate covering the lower-level left-hand part. The building has dressed granite stacks over the gable ends.

The layout consists of a long rectangular range with a rear wing at right angles to the left of the middle and rear lean-tos. Originally, it was a two-room plan house with a lobby and stair between a large kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right. In the late 18th century, a one-room plan cottage was added at either end, along with a service wing behind the kitchen.

The building is two storeys high and has an overall five-window front facing south-east. The original house is in the middle, featuring a nearly symmetrical three-window front, with one-window front former cottages on the left and right. The front of the original house was remodelled and heightened in the 19th century. There are two granite porches: one in front of the main doorway at the centre, which has a 19th-century four-panel door, and another to the left with an old ledged door. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
