Description

West Barns House, located in West Barns, Dunbar, is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical house designed in an L-plan. The western and northern elevations are constructed of droved grey ashlar, featuring a raised base, a first-floor cill course, rusticated quoins, and a moulded cornice. The rear and southern gable are harled.

The entrance elevation on the west side showcases an Ionic doorpiece with a cornice and stone steps leading up to a panelled door adorned with a decorative fanlight. Tall windows flank the ground floor, while smaller windows are positioned above in each bay. A piend-roofed dormer is centrally located.

On the east elevation, there is a stair window at the center, with ground and first-floor windows to the left and a later 19th-century addition to the right, which is advanced and has a piend roof. The northern gable features a wide gable with two widely spaced windows, a bipartite window above to the left, and a smaller window to the right, along with a central gable head window. The southern gable has two widely grouped windows on each floor and a central gable head window, similar to the northern gable, with a modern greenhouse addition to the left.

The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, while the first-floor windows have a 9-pane pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are polygonal, coped gable head stacks on the northern elevation, a harled gable head stack on the southern gable, and a battered wallhead stack on the eastern addition.

Inside, there is a tripartite vestibule screen with a fanlight and a winding stair.

The property is complemented by polygonal ashlar gatepiers to the north with moulded coping, which are attached to rubble walls. A pedestrian gate is located to the east of the piers, along with a blinded pointed arched opening further east. Arrowhead cast-iron railings are present with a gateway to the west of the house, adjacent to Biel Water.
