Description
The Old Bakehouse on Main Street in Stenton is likely a 17th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It is a two-storey rectangular plan structure that served as both a baker's house and bakery, with an earlier 19th-century extension at the rear. The exterior is made of pink sandstone rubble with harl pointing and features ashlar window surrounds.
On the northeast elevation, there are six irregular bays. The center has two blocked doorways, with the one on the left being lower. To the right, there are two small square windows, and one small window to the left. The first floor has three widely spaced small windows located under the eaves.
The southeast elevation has altered windows and features a gabled extension that projects at the outer right. There is a blank gable facing the wynd on the northeast side, and the rear extension to the left diminishes in height as it rises with the ground. This extension includes a cart entrance, a small window, and a doorway. The southwest gable is adjoined by a later building.
The building has a small-pane modern glazing pattern, pantiles on the roof, and coped gable end stacks, showcasing the distinctive early East Lothian skew form.
