Description
The Dalrymple Arms Hotel, located at 10 and 12 Quality Street in North Berwick, is a late 18th to early 19th century, two-storey and attic hotel that was reconstructed and extended in 1893 by surveyor Matthew Duncan. The hotel features a rubble two-bay building to the south and a brick building to the north, with harled walls to the east and west and a rendered north gable with painted margins.
The west front is six bays wide, with the two southern bays showcasing a painted tripartite pilastered public house front. The central entrance has panelled double doors topped with a small pane fanlight, flanked by large square windows with small-pane upper panels. Above the entrance is a bolection moulded fascia adorned with quasi-ball finials and a broken pediment at the center that encloses a finial.
The northern range features a central pilastered doorpiece with a panelled door and fanlight, flanked by two windows. There are four first-floor windows and five gabled timber dormer heads. The final two southern bays are divided by weathered crowsteps, while the north gable has brick crowsteps.
The east elevation includes a large modern two-storey extension projecting from the south. The hotel has a variety of four-pane and small-pane glazing in its sash windows, a slate roof, and a mutual gable. Decorative wrought-iron lamp and trade sign brackets, along with some decorative gutter fixtures, add to its character.
