Description

New Mains is a tall barn and engine house built in the later 19th century. The structure is made of roughly squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings and has slate roofs.

The north-south barn features gabled ends to the north and south, with a loft opening on the north side and an apex stack at the south gable for the bothy. The engine house is attached off-centre to the left on the west side. There is a wide opening to the right of centre that includes a hayloft door topped with a piended dormerhead. To the south, there are modern brick buildings. The north-south barn has an L-plan shape due to the addition of a wing on the east side, which includes ventilation slits on the north elevation.

The engine house has a rectangular plan with a taller central section that features a machinery entrance and a roof that sweeps over a northern projection. It is linked to the barn by a recessed linking bay and has large slates on the roof. A tall pedestal is located at the southwest angle, with a circular section squat brick stalk above it, which terminates in a raised ring and a coved support for the coping ring above.
