Description
12 Fidra Avenue in Dirleton is a group of district council houses designed by W J Walker Todd in 1919, later influenced by the Arts and Crafts style. The houses are arranged in a cul-de-sac and consist of six pairs across four designs. All feature 12-pane glazing in sash and case windows and have slated roofs with swept eaves.
The pairs numbered 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 11 and 12 are single storey with attics and are mirrored in design, finished in harled exterior. Their front elevations form a U-plan with two recessed bays at the center, showcasing slate-hung, swept bipartite dormers. The outer bays are gabled and advanced, with eaves that are lower on the outer sides and include doorways. There is a variety of window sizes in the gables, arranged in a mirrored pattern.
The rear elevations also follow a U-plan, featuring two recessed bipartite windows in the center bays along with single first-floor windows. The outer bays have even gables. The side elevations are asymmetrical, with a projecting bay beneath the main roof and a door that is set back. Harled stacks are positioned at the center ridges.
Pairs numbered 9 and 10 are similar in style, being single storey and attic mirrored pairs, also harled. Their west elevation has an M-gabled design with an advanced center and lower outer bays, featuring regularly placed doors and windows in an asymmetrical layout. The rear elevation is similar.
Pairs 5 and 6 are a symmetrical mirrored pair made of snecked rubble. Their east elevation has a U-plan with two recessed bays at the center, flanked by advanced porches in re-entrant angles and advanced gabled outer bays. Small lights are positioned beside the doorways at the center and are repeated on the inner sides of the gables. The inner eaves are swept down to the gables, and the rears are simplified.
Pairs 7 and 8 are also a symmetrical mirrored pair made of snecked rubble. Their west elevation features a U-plan with two bipartite windows at the center, flanked by doorways in re-entrant angles. The advanced outer bays have bipartite windows and piended roofs. The east elevation has advanced bays at the center with a roof that continues in a main sweep, with doorways flanked by lights at the center and recessed blank outer bays. There are ridge and end wallhead stacks.
