Description
This is a field barn with an attached wheelhouse located at West House Farm, dating from the early 19th century, with the engine house added in the mid-19th century. The structure is built of rubblestone laid to course and features a pantile roof with stone coping and ridges. The barn consists of six bays, with the engine house projecting at the center and having a semi-octagonal end.
The barn has a plinth and quoins, with two doorways; the left one is blocked, while the right has a board door, both framed with punch-dressed quoins and lintels. There are also blocked slit vents and block kneelers. The engine house features stone columns, with the bays filled in with later rubblestone, and is topped with an obelisk roof finial. The barn gables have blocked pitching holes, and at the rear, there are opposing board stable doors.
Inside, the barn is divided into two cells, each originally having a loft, though one loft has now been removed. It has log-like tie-beams and principal-rafter roof trusses. The engine house contains large-scantling beams. An attached covered yard and loose-box range at the rear are not included in the listing.
