Description
Fern Deep is a rectory that has been converted into a house, originally dated 1691, with heightening in the mid to late 18th century and a mid-19th century addition, along with some alterations in the 20th century. The building is primarily constructed of coursed squared herringbone-tooled stone, featuring a Welsh slate roof on the 19th-century section, while the older part has pantiles with stone coping and ridges.
On the south elevation, the 17th-century section on the left includes three two-storey bays and a single-storey bay at the left end. The 19th-century wing on the right has a gable end and is two storeys high with two sets of two bays. The 17th-century part features a chamfered quoined doorway with a triangular soffit lintel inscribed "T:C : RECTOR/A:D 1691" between the left-hand bays. To the left, there is a 2-light 18-pane side-sliding sash window in a chamfered surround, and to the right, a 3-light 24-pane side-sliding sash, a single chamfered light, and a 20th-century French window, with the outer windows having former chamfered mullion window surrounds. The first floor has small-pane side-sliding sash windows arranged in groups of three, two, and three lights, and there is an eaves band. The single-storey bay has a block kneeler, while the two-storey section has a shaped kneeler at the left end and end stacks.
The 19th-century wing features 12-pane sashes, oversailing eaves, and a ridge stack. The rear of the older part has outshuts of different builds, with the central one now being open-fronted. The right return of the 19th-century wing has windows similar to the front but features tripartite arrangements on the ground floor, with central 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
