Description

Baysdale Abbey is a large farmhouse dated 1822, with alterations from the 17th century on the left side and a slightly later section on the right. It is built on the site of a Cistercian nunnery that existed before 1211.

The building features coursed rubble construction and a Welsh slate roof with stone ridge, copings, and stacks, including one brick stack. It has two storeys and a central section with five irregular bays. The entrance, located in the second bay, consists of a six-panel door with a patterned radial fanlight, set in a panelled reveal with a wood architrave. Above the door is a datestone with the initials I D dated 1633, and another datestone from 1822 with the initials M.R. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and projecting sills, some of which have been renewed. Notably, there is a Yorkshire sash window with a fixed upper light on the ground floor to the right.

The right section of the farmhouse has more regular stonework and scattered openings, including three boarded doors (the central one with an overlight), a casement window to the left, and three replaced sash windows with glazing bars above. A projecting staircase bay on the left side features a pointed-arched window with Y-tracery. The older left part of the building is lower and more irregular, containing a modern glazed door, two boarded doors, and two windows on the ground floor. On the first floor, there is a stair window with an interlaced head and a small Yorkshire sash, along with two wide late 20th-century windows on the right. An extruded porch with a six-panel door under a gabled hood on brackets is located at the extreme left, featuring Tudor-arched windows with Y-tracery in the porch and the return wall above. The return of the set-back part has sash windows with glazing bars.

The long, plain, slightly irregular rear elevation has 14 bays with sash windows, some of which have been replaced. Inside, the farmhouse showcases six-panel doors in architraves, chimney-pieces, and a Tudor-arched passage, all appearing to be from the early 19th century.
