DARTINGTON SX76SE Barn Immediately South 1/485 East of Billany 11.1.90 Farmhouse

Barn and horse engine house. Circa late C17. Cob and stone rubble, the outshuts and horse engine house are entirely stone rubble. Steeply pitched corruqate iron-roof with gabled right (west) end and hipped left (east) end. Plan: Large rectangular-plan barn with opposing doorways to threshing floors to right and left of centre. The lower left (east) has been partitioned off and a floor inserted, C19 outshuts added at rear left of centre and at front right and a C19 horse engine house at rear right. The outshut at centre of front is a late addition. Exterior: North front has 2 cart entrances to right and left of centre. At centre and to right the main roof is carried down over later outshuts and canopies over the cart entrances, the right hand canopy on wooden cantilevers. At the rear (south) a round-ended C19 horse engine house to left with a semi-conical scantle slate roof and to right a C19 outshut with a lean-to roof. Interior: The roof has 13 (one at west end missing) closely-spaced trusses, some of the principals have slightly curved feet but all rest on the wall plate; mortice and tenoned apexes, the collars halved, lapped and pegged to the principals. Inserted partition wall at east end. The floor at the east end has collapsed. The engine house has a large beam.
