Description
5 Castle Mains Cottages is an earlier 19th-century single-storey row of five cottages, featuring an attic storey that breaks the eaves. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, with droved ashlar openings that have chamfered arrises.
The southeast elevation has ten bays, with a single doorway on the outer left and paired doorways at the fourth and fifth, as well as the eighth and ninth bays from the left. The main roof sweeps down to create porches supported by timber columns with decorative brackets and plain balustrades. The cottages have boarded doors with decorative fittings, and hoodmoulded bipartite windows in the intervening bays. There are five gabled wallhead bipartite dormers, each adorned with decorative barge boarding and finials.
At the rear, there have been alterations including plate glass glazing to the sash windows of the front two bays and one end, along with coped stacks. The roof is slated, featuring overhanging eaves supported by timber brackets.
