Description

The Calender Block at Camperdown Works on Methven Street in Dundee was designed by G A Cox around 1862 to 1865, with a small extension added in 1883. This building is primarily a single-storey structure, although the southern elevation features a partially two-storey section that houses a ground floor canteen and store. The original building was extended from 20 to 27 bays in 1883 and includes sash and case windows, a cornice, and a parapet. The eastern elevation is also single-storey and has loading doors, along with a cornice and parapet. At the northeast corner, there is a two-storey beam engine house with windows framed in architraves, cornice, and parapet. The building has six hipped roofs, two of which are slated, but the northern section has been modernised in the centre while the eastern and western ends remain slated.

Inside, the building features cast-iron columns with brackets for shafting and heavy foundations at the rear of the calenders. The original timber roofs are preserved in the two southern bays, while the northern section has been modernised.

The listing also includes a colossal 152-inch, five-bowl calender, complete with arms and weights, likely made by Robertson and Orchar in either 1874 or 1885. Additionally, there are elaborate stone gate piers with wrought iron lamps dating from the 1860s.
