Description
Lochee Old Parish Church, located on Methven Street in Dundee, was designed by David Neave and built between 1829 and 1830, with some remodelling and a new hall added by Alexander Johnston in 1883-1884. This rectangular neo-classical church features an ashlar facade and rubble-built sides.
The southeast elevation has a three-bay shallow pilastered anta facade, with a central pilastered and corniced door. Above, there is a pediment with a tympanum oculus. The church includes a small tower and spire, with a square pilastered lower stage that has louvred arched belfry openings, angle antefixae, and an octagonal second stage with oculi. The spire is facetted and topped with a weather vane, and there is an octagonal stack on the right. Square corniced porches were added in 1884. The sides of the church are simple and consist of six bays. An organ chamber was added to the rear in 1884, featuring a lean-to roof, and there is a finial on the north gable. The roof is slate, and the windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern, likely inserted in 1884.
Inside, there is a horseshoe gallery supported by Corinthian columns, with panelled gallery fronts that were cantilevered forward in 1884. The organ is situated within a curvilinear opening created in 1884. The ceiling has modern panels, while a substantial king-post roof is present above. The hall, designed by Alexander Johnston in 1884, features a gable facing Bright Street with stepped tripartite arched windows between consoled pedimented doorpieces and an apex pediment. The interior includes timber collar-beam pendants and wrought-iron ties, and the hall has a slate roof with modern window glazing patterns.
The boundary walls are rubble-built, with coursed rubble along Methven Street, where they were rebuilt and slightly set back in 1884. Square gatepiers and post-war railings complete the setting.
