Description

The Head Post Office in County Square, Paisley, was built in 1893 and later modified, designed by architect W W Robertson for the Board of Works. It features a two-storey, ten-bay range in the Tudor Gothic style, with a three-storey and attic extension to the south in the Art Nouveau style, completed in 1912 by architect W T Oldrieve from the Office of Works. The building is constructed of ashlar stone.

The two-storey section has eight symmetrical bays, each with mullioned and transomed windows set in panels on both floors. The ground floor has pairs of lights, while the first floor has three-light windows in each bay. A fretted parapet band runs above the ground floor, and there is an eaves cornice and a battlemented parapet with pinnacles, which is raised over the two central bays where the clockface is located.

At the right end, there are two bays beneath a finialled gable with a facetted angle turret. The door features an ogival design with a two-transomed tympanum, accompanied by a two-light window to the right. The first-floor windows are carved and hoodmoulded. The return elevation is similarly detailed but has a modern flat-headed window on the ground floor. The slate roof has a triple end stack at the rear gable.

The 1912 extension includes a three-storey and attic block with three bays facing County Square, a splayed corner bay, and four bays along County Place, alternating between wide and narrow. The former main entrance is located at the corner and features a moulded and carved segmentally headed doorway, with another segmentally headed doorway at the end bay on County Place. There is a variety of mullioned and transomed windows, including canted oriels that rise two floors, one of which is located on County Square. The parapet is raised over the splayed bay and gables of the oriel bays. The return to County Place has similarly detailed first and second-floor windows, along with two gabletted dormers that rise through the eaves. A tall wallhead panelled stack, dated 1912, is located on the west bay and features a "cap house" detail. The slate roof has straight skews, except for the crowstepped cap house.
