Description
Brough's Buildings, located at 37-40 Dock Street in Dundee, is a late 19th-century commercial building designed in the style of William Mackison. This four-storey structure with an attic features Renaissance details and is situated on a corner site. It is constructed from grey sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate Mansard roof that has an elongated dome and a cast-iron crown at the angle.
The ground floor is corniced, with a cill course running across the second and third floors, and a corniced parapet at the top. The building has angle pilasters with pedimented caps. The windows are architraved, featuring two-pane timber sash and case frames. The design includes single, bipartite, and four-light canted windows that rise through the parapet to the attic, adorned with anthemion-capped pediments. The angle features a tripartite window with an anthemion-capped pedimented dormer, while the first and second floors have alternating segmental and triangular pediments linked as a continuous course at the second floor. Corniced stacks are also present.
The original shopfronts are located on the ground floor, with pilaster dividers and some cast-iron columns that have decorative capitals. A small-paned band runs along the top of the windows, although it is masked at Dock Street.
On the Commercial Street elevation, the ground floor features shopfronts, while the first, second, and third floors have windows arranged from left to right as bipartite, single, canted, and single. There is a pedimented bipartite dormer to the left and a canted window to the right. The Dock Street elevation mirrors this arrangement.
The rounded angle bay includes a shopfront on the ground floor, with a tripartite window on the first, second, and third floors, and a tripartite dormer with a stack to the left.
Inside, all shops feature cornices, and original boarding is present in all except for the corner shop.
