Somerton House Hotel, Carlisle Road, Lockerbie

Somerton House Hotel is a later 19th century villa that has been converted into a hotel and features "Thomsonesque" Greek revival ornamentation both inside and out. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with additional full-height canted bays at the corners. It is constructed of red ashlar stone with unmargined openings and incised ornamentation above the window heads. The first-floor windows are adorned with pilasters that rise from the jambs.

A central porch features a pilastered doorway and curved side walls, with carved lions flanking decorative bands between the floors. The main roof is piended and platformed, covered with slate and lead, and includes decorative cast-iron work on the platform. The chimney stacks have incised ornamentation, and the canted bays have facetted roofs that integrate with the main roof, topped with eagle finials. There are rear wings, and a modern addition has been made to the south flank.

Inside, the hotel boasts neo-Egyptian doorcases and cornice plasterwork that includes discs and elongated egg-and-dart detailing. The property is set behind a low boundary wall with piers that feature incised ornamentation.
