Description
Brownrigg Farmhouse, dated 1884, is an exceptionally large two-storey farmhouse with a simpler lower three-bay east service range that has been converted into a separate house. The building is constructed from stugged and snecked red ashlar with polished dressings. Most windows are either bipartite or canted and feature plate glass sashes.
The main house has a T-plan layout, with the north and south elevations each consisting of three bays, where the westmost bay is advanced. These elevations include canted windows, with a corbelled oriel on a circular column at the south end, and shaped gables. The five-bay west elevation has a central entrance bay that is also advanced, with canted angles at the ground level and a square corbelled section above, topped with a shaped gable. The entrance features a hood-moulded depressed-arched doorway with moulded reveals decorated with dog-tooth ornamentation, and a corbelled oriel above it. The west elevation also showcases three gables, with a tall central stair window that has three lights with cusped heads. A bracketted cornice runs along the top, and a weather vane finial is positioned over the north gable. The building has corniced stacks and slate roofs.
To the northwest, there are square gatepiers with gableted caps and curved short quadrant walls, all made of red ashlar.
