Description
Marchmount, located on Marchmount Avenue in Dumfries, is an earlier 19th-century building that originally served as a manse. It features two storeys over a basement and has three bays, although it was doubled in depth in the late 19th century, resulting in a total of four bays on the flanks. The exterior is constructed of red ashlar stone.
On the south-west elevation, there is a central pedimented "Doric" porch that leads to a panelled door with sidelights beneath a long narrow fanlight. Above this, there is a tripartite window arrangement. The windows are architraved and fitted with plate-glass sashes, with cornices at the ground level and cill bands. The building is topped with a cornice and a blocking course, and features symmetrically placed stacks with grouped octagonal flues. The roof is piended and covered with slate, including a platform.
The north-east elevation has a mullioned and transomed stair window in a shallow recessed central bay, which also includes a modern fire escape. The main cornice is supported on corbels, and the inner bay of the south-east front of the addition is similarly recessed.
Inside, the building has been re-modelled to include elaborate Classical interiors that are likely contemporary with the addition. It features some rich plasterwork and a wooden stair with an arcaded balustrade.
