Stables, Greystone, 53 Moffat Road, Dumfries

Greystone, located at 53 Moffat Road in Dumfries, is a late Georgian villa built in 1834, which includes stables and gatepiers.

The villa is a single storey structure with a railed basement, constructed from droved red ashlar with polished dressings. The east and west sides each have two bays, with the southernmost bay on each side being bowed and featuring a tripartite window. There is a lean-to conservatory that runs the full length of the south wall, complete with a clerestory. A shallow porch with a pediment and slab sides is centrally located on the otherwise blank north wall, accessed by flyover steps. The villa has sash windows, with small panes on the ground floor and multi-panes in the basement. It features a base course, a cornice, and a pair of symmetrically placed wall-head stacks at both the north and south ends. The roof is shallow-pitched and piended, curving over the bows.

The stables are a single storey with a loft and have a rectangular plan. The central gabled bay contains a coach-house with a loft window above it, as well as a dovecot. The stables are built of squared red rubble with ashlar dressings.

The gatepiers consist of four corniced square rusticated ashlar piers with raised caps, which are linked by low quadrants.
