Description

The stables are an ancillary structure to Marchfield House, built circa 1878 by James Barbour. The main house is a two-story villa with a three-stage tower exhibiting Tudor detailing. It is constructed of bull-faced, squared, and snecked red sandstone, with an ashlar base course, dividing band course, first-floor sill course, and eaves cornice; the tower is entirely ashlar faced.

The southwest elevation features a central entrance tower with a segmental opening at ground level, flanked by paired pilasters with stylised capitals, a shield, and fleurons. Above the door is a billetted lintel and plate glass fanlight. A short flight of steps leads to the entrance. A first-floor window above the entrance has a block pediment. The towerhead breaks the eaves, featuring an oculus and a segmental-headed bipartite window to the southwest, with single windows to the returns. It is topped with a mutuled cornice, fretted stone balustrade, dies, engaged flues to the corners, and a round-arched shelter at the stairhead, leading to a platform roof. To the left of the tower is a bay with a canted ground-floor window, triglyph and guttae details, a blocking course, a tablet, and a corniced first-floor window. A two-light arrowslit is set within the curvilinear gablehead, which is finished with obelisk finials. To the right is a canted bay with a window to each face and a polygonal roof, topped by a cast-iron finial.

The southeast elevation has a curvilinear gabled bay centrally, with a canted window at ground level and a bipartite window above. A doorway is flanked to the left, with a window at the first floor. An advanced chimneybreast is sited to the left. Recessed bays form a service wing to the right.

The northeast elevation features a curvilinear gabled bay centrally, with a projecting window at ground level and a corniced bipartite window at the first floor above. A further gable projects to the outer left, with windows to the right.

Modern glazing is present throughout. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings. Wall and gablehead ashlar stacks have corniced coping.

Inside, a timber stair has decoratively carved newel posts and ball finials. Decorative plasterwork conceals support beams and is present to the trabeated, coved stairhead, which has a fine pitched rooflight and painted glass. Fine marble, classical-style chimney pieces are found within, one featuring paired contrasting green columned colonnettes. Deep skirting boards are also present.

The single-story, rectangular-plan stable range to the east has a piend roof and five bays, with three original doors and two blocked windows; a central gabled stone hayloft dormerhead is present. The roof is covered in grey slate. The interior of the stable features a cobbled floor and white-washed walls.
