Description

Craigmill House and Stable Court, built around 1875, is a two-storey villa with a basement and attic, designed in an L-plan layout. It features a three-bay front and an adjoining L-plan stable court at the rear. The building is constructed of stugged snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The south elevation includes a bull-faced base course, margined quoins at the corners and most windows, and chamfered edges at the east and west gables, with a similar treatment on the south elevation. The windows, which are currently boarded up, are likely made of plate glass and include single and bipartite designs. The deep eaves reveal exposed rafter and purlin ends, complemented by plain bargeboards and shouldered stacks with moulded cornices.

On the south elevation, there is a six-fielded-panel door with a fanlight at the center of the re-entrant, flanked by a blocked Doric pilastered doorpiece and a block pediment above the cornice. The first floor features a window, while bipartite windows are found at both the ground and first floors. To the left, there is another bipartite window at both levels, with a gable above. An advanced bay on the right showcases a full-height tripartite canted window, which is corbelled to a square at the attic level and includes an initialled panel, along with a window and gambrel roof.

The east elevation has a gable on the left with two windows on both the ground and first floors, although the first-floor window on the left has been cut down to serve as a door with a metal fire escape. The service wing on the right features a later porch and windows on both floors, while a single-storey half-piended roof bay at the far right includes various doors and openings.

The west gable displays two symmetrically placed windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a round-headed window in the attic. The north elevation has a single-storey, flat-roofed addition on the right with a stair window above it, and the advanced service wing on the left contains a door and four windows on the ground floor, with four additional windows on the first floor, arranged in a near-symmetrical fashion.

The stable court is a single-storey, L-plan structure that forms a quadrangle with the north elevation and service wing of the house. It is built of stugged snecked rubble with a slate roof and features various doors and windows on all elevations, including two-leaf carriage doors at the south gable of the west range.

The property is enclosed by two square-section gatepiers on the west, which have indented angles and moulded, gabletted caps. A round-coped rubble boundary wall extends around the house to the south, east, and north.
