Description

Craigmount House is a two-story and attic villa, built around 1896 to 1898 and likely designed by William Gillespie Lamond while he was a draughtsman for C and L Ower. The house is basically rectangular in plan and constructed from snecked bull-faced rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a grey slate roof. A red tile platform roof features at the entrance porch, and at the south elevation, along with rectangular windows and a verandah. The building has a base course and features single, paired, tripartite, and rectangular windows with plate glass sash and case glazing. Deep eaves are present, along with plain bargeboards, moulded rafter ends, decorative corbels and braces to the finialled dormerheads. Corniced stacks, some shouldered and breaking the eaves, are also visible, along with cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers, decorative terracotta ridge tiles and cans.

The west-facing (entrance) elevation has an entrance porch on the left with three windows and a door with side lights and a fanlight on the right return, approached by steps with a coped wall and a red tile platform roof. A window is located above the porch in the gable, and there's a prominent stack to the right. A ground floor window sits far right, and a dormerheaded window is situated at first floor level.

The south elevation features tripartite rectangular windows on the left and right, linked by a red tile platform roof slightly advanced at the centre, which forms a verandah with two round-headed arches. Two bipartite windows are at the first floor level, with a gable featuring a sculpted motif on the left and a dormerheaded window on the right.

The east elevation includes a ground floor window on the left, two windows on the first floor, and a hipped gable with a stack breaking through the eaves. A single-story kitchen wing with various windows and a platform roof is advanced at the right, clasping an angle and extending to the north elevation. A dormerheaded window and adjacent stack are positioned above.

The north elevation presents a door and window on the return of the kitchen wing on the left, three ground floor windows, a bipartite stair window, and a bipartite dormer window.

Inside, the porch features encaustic tiles and a stained glass window. The inner door is tripartite with etched glass, and original fireplaces, joinery, and furniture are present throughout. Foliate and moulded cornices are visible. A boarded dado is found in the cloakroom, and a scale and platt staircase has turned balusters. A stained glass stair window is also present.

A rectangular brick game larder is built into the natural ground slope at the northeast corner of the building. It has a pyramidal slate roof and the remnants of an apex vent, and a two-leaf boarded door.
