Description

This is a stable and associated boundary features to Elmswood, a large Victorian villa situated on The Crescent in Dunblane. The villa was built in 1874.

Elmswood is a 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular villa of a significant size, characterised by multiple gables and a squat, 2-stage entrance tower. Key features include overhanging eaves, barge boarding, and scrolled fretwork to the gable ends. The construction is primarily of snecked red sandstone, with yellow ashlar sandstone used for the margins. Long and short quoins are present, and the window reveals are chamfered.

The principal (North West) elevation showcases a slightly advanced, 2-stage entrance tower at the centre, featuring a timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight, flanked by narrow windows. A stepped continuous string course runs across the elevation. The tower’s pyramidal roof sweeps out to the eaves and is finished with a cast-iron weathervane finial. To the right is a gabled bay with a single ground floor window, while a broad bay to the left has paired ground floor windows and a single dormer window breaking the eaves of the first floor.

The Garden (South West) elevation is 5-bay wide. A slightly advanced, gabled bay at the centre features stone mullioned tripartite windows. To the left is an advanced, canted bay on the ground floor, and a single window to the outer left, with gabled wallhead dormers breaking the first-floor eaves. A single-storey, double-bay section is located to the right, featuring an advanced, canted bay with mullioned and transomed windows, topped with a coped parapet displaying a carved armorial crest.

The Rear (South East) elevation is single-storey and features a coped, crowstepped gable end with a gable end stack to the left, and paired small stone-mullioned bipartite windows. A plain, 2-storey section of the North East elevation returns to the right.

The Side (North East) elevation has a double-gabled bay to the outer left, with a modern ground floor addition and three first-floor windows engaging an advanced bay to the right. An advanced gabled bay is positioned to the right, with a service door on the ground floor and a gable end stack. A double bay extends to the outer right, incorporating a sliding boarded timber garage door with a small-pane window above and a service door with fanlight to the right and a single gabled wallhead breaking the eaves to the first floor.

The villa has plate glass and 4-pane, timber, sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing, and features paired, coped ridge stacks with tall clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative basket hoppers are in place. The interior includes good quality plasterwork, timber panelled doors, and timber dado rails.

The single-storey, 3-bay stable is located on the South West side and is gabled and of similar style to the main house. It features regular fenestration and a 2-leaf stable door on the outer right, grey slates, lead flashing, and a gable end stack to the South.

A high, coped random rubble boundary wall terminates in substantial, plain, square-plan gatepiers.
