Description
Glenacres is a villa dating from 1865. It is a two-storey, asymmetrical building of square plan, with an M-shaped gable arrangement and a pavilion-roofed entrance bay located on the south-east corner. The villa is constructed from squared and tooled yellow sandstone with ashlar margins. Windows feature shouldered arches and chamfered reveals. Overhanging eaves are barge boarded and are supported on corbelled timber brackets. The group value relates to the building's contribution to the character of its setting.
The south-east elevation, the principal facade, features a two-leaf, timber-panelled door in the centre of the entrance bay on the left side. Above the door is a label-stopped hoodmould. A steeply pitched gable with barge boarding breaks the eaves above a single window; the gable is topped with decorative cast-iron cresting. There is regular fenestration to the central bay. A large, rectangular, astragalled fixed-pane window is set into the ground floor of the bay on the right side. The first floor has a window with a gable breaking the eaves.
The north-west elevation showcases a stone-mullioned, bipartite window on the ground floor of the centre bay and a single-light window on the second floor. A slightly advanced gabled bay is on the left side with two small windows on the ground floor, a single window on the second floor, and a small, hoodmoulded, cusped attic window in the gablehead. A battered wallhead chimney is to the right of this bay. A two-storey, advanced canted window is on the bay to the right, breaking the eaves with highly decorative barge boarding. The upper storey of the right return features a stop-chamfered, blind arrow slit, and a gable breaking the eaves.
The north-east elevation has a three-bay, M-gabled layout with a single-storey, L-plan, gabled wing attached to the ground floor. A blind upper storey is present. The side elevation contains a single bay gable end, two bays to the left returning to the south-east, and a gabled bay to the right. To the right are two bays, followed by a two-bay, advanced gabled bay to the left.
The south-west elevation is also three-bayed and M-gabled with stone-mullioned, bipartite windows on the upper storey. There is a blind trefoil in the left gablehead, and carved chevrons above the window in the centre. A modern conservatory is located on the bay to the left; the centre has a stone-mullioned bipartite window on the ground floor, and a pavilion-roofed bay is on the right with a window on the ground floor and a blind, hoodmoulded, cusped window on the second floor.
The windows are predominantly four-pane, timber frame, sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods with moulded guttering are present, along with tall, coped gable stacks.
The interior was not inspected in 2001.
A summer house dating from 1889 stands nearby. This is a small, single-storey, square-plan rubble structure with a pointed-arch, bipartite entrance, featuring a multi-foil above.
