Description

Frank C Carruthers of Dumfries and Lockerbie. Circa 1896.

School with central tower. Free Renaissance. Single storey

with attics. Bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings, mullioned/mullioned and transomed windows mostly with

ornamental heads or pediments; variety of glazing patterns;

some multi-paned upper sashes. Slate roofs. Long symmetrical

W elevation breaks into 3 3-bay ranges, the outer ranges

L-plan with porches in re-entrant angles; the inner shallow

recessed with pierced parapet, main door and canted windows,

tower and attic storey set back and with high roofs behind.

Tower is square with engaged angle shafts terminating above

parapet in ogee-roofed turrets, arcaded belfry openings below

cornice, slated and leaded ogee roofed cupola.

Detached small octagonal structure to rear with round-arched

wide doorway, facetted roof with louvred apex ventilator with

leaded cap.
