Manager's House, 27 Bank Street, Annan

The Manager's House at 27 Bank Street in Annan, designed by Walter Newall around 1840, is a two-storey building that serves as both a bank and the manager's residence, prominently concluding the view south along Bank Street. The structure features classical details and is constructed entirely of red ashlar. A rusticated low banking office was added to the north side, likely in the late 19th century.

The original building has a square plan with three-bay elevations. The main entrance on the east side includes a central porch supported by square columns. The north elevation, which leads to the bank office, was originally designed in a similar style. The windows are bipartite, framed in chunky moulded architraves with apron and cornice details at the ground level, and fitted with lying-pane glazing. This detailing is consistent across all elevations, which also feature a first-floor cill band, wide angle margins, an eaves course, and a cornice. The roof is piended and covered with slate, and there are stacks with grouped octagonal flues.

Inside, there are elements of Greek revival detailing, including a grand central staircase illuminated by a cupola and featuring a cast-iron balustrade. The interior boasts well-proportioned friezes and cornices, as well as marble chimney pieces with pilasters supporting an entablature. The cellar is partly vaulted.

The property includes two corniced square gatepiers and a walled garden with iron railings along Bank Street.

The banking office, now functioning as a solicitors' office, has a balustraded three-bay north elevation with two Burlington windows flanking a similarly detailed door, and a bowed and channelled eastern end. The roof is concealed. Inside, there is an apsidal entrance hall with doors set in heavy timber door cases, complemented by an impressive cornice and ceiling plasterwork.
