Public Library, Bank Street, Annan

The public library on Bank Street in Annan, designed by George Washington Browne and built around 1880, showcases an Elizabethan Renaissance style. This three-storey building features three bays and a prominent shaped gable facing the street, with a fourth square bay to the right that is set forward and includes a gated pend leading to the market to the east. The structure is constructed of red ashlar and is adorned with large mullioned and transomed windows that have leaded panes. The door on the left and the pend are both designed with depressed arches and cornices, complemented by moulded reveals. The first-floor windows feature arched lights that are positioned between supporting Ionic pilasters on corbels, which in turn support an entablature. Attached columns flank the four-light arched windows and support a pediment. The building is topped with a slate roof.
