Description

Sundial Cottage, formerly known as Joseph Thomson Cottage, is a single-storey, three-bay cottage built in the mid-19th century, with possible re-facing in the later 19th century. The cottage is constructed of squared and stugged coursed pink sandstone, featuring red ashlar dressings. To the right of the door, there is an inscribed stone panel. The building has tabbed openings and long and short quoins on the right side. The roof is adorned with cast-iron lights.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The cottage has corniced end stacks with both octagonal and circular cans, and it is topped with a grey slate roof that has saw-toothed skews.

In addition to the main cottage, there are ancillary buildings including a red sandstone pump housing next to a retaining wall at the rear, which has a recess for a copper boiler. Curved stone steps lead to a slated pitch-roofed stone building that features a finialled gable and saw-toothed skews. There is also a small slated, pitch-roofed stone building that was formerly a piggery, along with a slated brick privy nearby.

Inside, the cottage has enclosures for box beds and a stone cantilevered stair that leads to the attic.
