Description

2 The Cross is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay former public house and Temperance Hotel, which has since been divided into Nos. 2 and 3 The Cross. It is constructed from squared and coursed red sandstone with ashlar margins, all painted white. The front elevation facing the street is nearly symmetrical, featuring a centered door within a corniced stone-slab porch.

The first-floor windows are positioned just below the eaves, with a bipartite window located to the left of the main door. The building has timber sash and case windows, while the right side of the front elevation and the side facing No. 3 The Cross have uPVC replacement windows. The roof is piended to the east side, equipped with corniced end stacks, and covered with graded grey slates. There is a two-storey, two-bay wing attached to the rear, creating an L-plan.

The interior, as observed in 2018, has been subdivided, with the third bay and rear wing now forming No. 3. No. 2 features a stone staircase with a timber handrail, while No. 3 has a timber staircase. The basement level has been infilled.

At the rear, there is a single-storey, mono-pitch outbuilding range with sliding timber doors, likely originally built for overnight stabling and later modified for use as a garage or storage. Additionally, there is a cobblestone yard at the back.
