1 The Cross, Main Street, Penpont

1 The Cross is an earlier 19th century, two-storey and basement, three-bay corner house that was formerly a shop. It is constructed of stugged red ashlar with polished dressings. The south elevation features a central door, which is approached by steps and set within a corniced stone-slab porch. The southwest corner of the building is canted at the ground floor and has a blocked shop door, with a corbelled square section above. There are basement openings located to the right of the porch. The ground floor window to the left of the porch is a later alteration. The windows throughout are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing. The west gable has straight skews, and there are corniced end stacks. The roof is covered with graded grey slates.

Adjoining the northwest corner is a tall archway made of stugged pink ashlar, which is presumably associated with the former inn at 2 and 3 The Cross. This archway provides access to a cobblestone yard at the rear.
