Description

The cottage and dovecot at Hillside date from around 1840. The single-storey cottage is connected to a square-plan dovecot with a pyramidal roof. Both structures are built from rubble with red ashlar dressings and have slate roofs.

The cottage features a west elevation with three wide bays. It has a panelled door with a fanlight, located behind a columned semi-circular central porch that is flanked by narrow windows. There are single windows in the outer bays, each with a 4-pane glazing pattern. The roof has two symmetrically placed stacks with cavetto cornices and is covered with graded slates.

The dovecot, located within the courtyard to the east of the cottage, is partly harled and has a row of flight-holes at the upper level of its elevations. It features projecting eaves and a weathervane finial, and it may have been re-roofed in the second half of the 19th century. The dovecot is set behind an ashlar-built boundary wall.
