Description
Balgray House is a mansion built between 1883 and 1885, featuring classical details. It has a rectangular plan with symmetrical elevations, advanced and recessed bays, and stands two storeys high with a basement and attic. The basement is sunken on the east side against a terrace, which has been removed on the west side. The entrance is marked by a central port-cochere supported by Ionic pilasters.
The exterior is constructed of stugged red coursers with polished dressings, string courses, and rusticated quoins. Most windows are architraved and corniced, with small-paned sash windows on the ground floor and plate-glass windows above. The first floor and wall-head attic windows feature pedimented dormer heads. A canted window is centrally located on the long west wall, flanked by wide pedimented central bays. The main cornice is topped by a plain parapet that encloses a piended and platform roof, which is slated and leaded, with large corniced stacks.
There is a low garage extension on the north flank. Inside, the house boasts extensive timber panelling and decorative plasterwork.
