The Rectory, 54, 56 High Street, Kirkcudbright

The Rectory, located at 54 and 56 High Street in Kirkcudbright, is a terraced house dating from the earlier 19th century. It stands two stories tall with a dormerless attic above a basement and features three bays. The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar. A central door is accessed by steps, framed by a broad pilastered doorpiece that includes a recessed door with panelled pilasters and a cornice, along with a fanlight above. There are band courses at both the ground and first floor levels. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows set in architraves, corniced, and with aprons. The structure is topped with a cornice and blocking course, and it has end stacks with a slate roof. A modern forestair on the left provides access to the upper floors, and there is a two-storey rear wing. The property is also adorned with spearheaded cast-iron railings.
