74-78 Grassmarket, Edinburgh

74-78 Grassmarket is a 17th-century tenement building, dated 1634, which was rebuilt between 1929 and 1930 by Ebebezer J MacRae. It has four storeys and an attic, featuring a five-bay façade with a public house on the ground floor and a lower advanced stair tower at the center. The building is constructed of random rubble and has relieving arches above the first and second floor windows.

To the left, there is a taller two-bay block with a steep roof that includes a piend-roofed dormer and a crowstepped gable on the right. The lower two-bay block on the right has a catslide roof and a crowstepped dormer head on the third floor that breaks the eaves, along with a small window in the gable. The projecting stair tower features a roll-moulded doorway and an original lintel stone, along with a moulded string course on the first and second floors. The public house has a modern front.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The building has corniced ashlar end stacks with circular cans and is topped with graded grey slates.
