46, 48 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh

46 and 48 Candlemaker Row is an early 18th-century tenement that was reconstructed by Ebenezer J McRae in 1930 and restored by Simpson and Brown in 1978. This two-storey building with an attic features three bays and includes a shop on the ground floor. It is constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings. The ground floor bays are divided by pilasters and have a continuous fascia and cornice above.

At No 48, there is a two-leaf timber panelled door leading to the flats on the right, while No 46 has a two-leaf timber panelled door to the shop, flanked by windows. The first floor has four windows, with a blocked former window in the centre. The three attic windows have later ashlar gablets.

The building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, stone skews, and corniced stacks with circular cans on the ridge and a wallhead stack at the rear.
