Description

Candlemakers' Hall is a four-storey, eight-bay tenement block located at 36, 38, and 40 Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh. It was originally built in 1722 by James Watson and later remodelled by Ebenezer J McRae in 1929. The building features two five-storey projecting square stair towers on the south and north sides, constructed from random rubble.

On the northeast elevation, there is a five-storey gabled stair tower on the left, which includes a carved panel above a timber panelled door set in a moulded surround at ground level, along with a circular window in the gable. The four central bays are irregularly fenestrated, with a door located in the second bay from the right, accompanied by a splayed wallhead stack above and a narrow bay to the outer right. To the right, there is a piend-roofed stair tower with a door at ground level, and two outer bays that are also irregularly fenestrated, featuring a door to the left and a splayed wallhead stack above.

The windows are fitted with small-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, and the building has broad splayed wallhead stacks with circular cans at both the front and rear.
