Description
32 and 34 George IV Bridge is a pair of shops built by George Smith around 1850 and 1857. The building features a two-storey, three-bay terraced shop with a bow-ended design on the north side, rising to three stories on Candlemaker Row, and a single-storey shop on the south side, which has two stories on Candlemaker Row. It is situated on a triangular site at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row. The exterior is made of droved ashlar with polished dressings, and coursed sandstone is used on Candlemaker Row. The two-storey block has a moulded eaves cornice and a parapet, with keyblocked lugged architraves framing the upper windows.
On the east elevation facing George IV Bridge, the slightly recessed three-bay block on the right has a modern shop front set within Corinthianesque pilasters at ground level, with three windows above, one of which is blinded. There is a pilaster strip to the left at the first floor and a single window on the first floor of the south-facing bowed elevation. A two-leaf glazed door leads to the shop on the left, with later windows flanked by paired fluted Corinthian pilasters.
The west elevation facing Candlemaker Row has a later shop inserted at the cellar level of No 34 George IV Bridge. The shop front of No 21 Candlemaker Row is pilastraded, featuring a glazed timber panelled door with a small-pane glazed fanlight, flanked by windows. There are two windows on each floor above, with three being blind, and a wallhead stack at the parapet.
The upper storeys have timber sash and case windows with 4-pane and 12-pane glazing. A corniced ashlar end stack is present on the south elevation, and the leaded flat roof is concealed behind the parapet.
Additionally, there is an ashlar-coped coursed sandstone retaining wall at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row, complemented by decorative cast-iron railings.
