Description

The Frankenstein Pub, located at 26 George IV Bridge in Edinburgh, was designed by Charles Leadbetter in 1859. This decorated Gothic church is situated on an asymmetrical site and features cream coursed ashlar with polished dressings facing George IV Bridge, while the rear is constructed from ashlar at the ground level and squared and snecked rubble above. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a roll-moulded crocketed eaves course, and a gablehead with a fleur-de-lys finial on George IV Bridge. The windows and door have chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds with carved label stops, and the windows display curvilinear tracery.

On the east elevation facing George IV Bridge, there are four bays. To the left, there is a two-leaf timber door featuring Gothic detailing within a pointed-arched doorpiece, supported by stiff-leaf capitals on paired colonnettes. Above the door is a two-light window with a trefoil. The tower, aligned with the wall, has a blind circular multifoil opening and is flanked by turrets with broached finialed spires, all connected by an arcaded parapet. The central gable, topped with a fleur-de-lys finial, contains a tall three-light window, flanked by smaller two-light windows and circular windows with mouchettes below, all linked by a continuous hoodmould at the cill level of the central window.

On the west elevation facing Candlemaker Row, there are flat-headed windows on the ground and first floors, with pointed-arched windows above. A string course runs between the first and second floors. To the outer left, there is a flat-roofed two-bay infill with a drum that lights the stair. To the left, there is a pitch-roofed V-plan bay with two-light cusped windows on each facet and an apex stack. The outer right features single windows and a small trefoil window high in the center.

Inside, the space has been altered for its new use as a public house, but retains a ribbed ceiling supported by foliaged corbels, a U-plan gallery on cast-iron columns, and a pulpit with a swept canopy over the sounding-board.
