Description

27 and 28 George IV Bridge is a terraced tenement block built in 1859 by Charles Leadbetter. The building has three storeys and six bays, with four storeys facing Candlemaker Row, and features shops on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar at the ground level, while the upper sections are constructed from squared and snecked rubble.

On the east elevation facing George IV Bridge, there is a cornice at the ground floor, a dividing band between the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course. The upper floor windows have roll-moulded surrounds. The shop to the right has a modern fascia, while the central entrance to the flats features a timber panelled door with a plate glass fanlight. The original shopfront to the left includes a glazed timber panelled door, a plate glass fanlight, and chamfered surrounds to the windows. There is a piend-roofed dormer on the outer right.

The west elevation facing Candlemaker Row has corniced shops at the ground floor, with a timber panelled door in the second bay from the right flanked by windows. There is a glazed timber door in the fourth bay from the left, along with three windows that have modern glazing to the left. The central entrance to the flats has a timber panelled door. The upper floors are irregularly fenestrated, and there are later dormers in the attic.

The windows on George IV Bridge feature 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, while those on Candlemaker Row have 12-pane glazing and plate glass in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates, with stone skews and corniced end stacks that have circular cans, along with a shouldered wallhead stack on Candlemaker Row.
