Description
56 and 56A Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh is a four-storey, three-bay, two-window tenement building designed by Thomas Brown in 1855, likely incorporating earlier elements. The building features coursed squared sandstone with painted ashlar at the ground level and random rubble at the rear. It has a base course and projecting cills on the upper windows.
The ground floor includes a modern boarded timber door leading to flats on the left and a modern glazed timber door for the shop, which has a plate glass fanlight and is flanked by modern shop windows. The centre bay above the ground floor is blank, and there is a wallhead stack.
The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The front has a broad central wallhead stack, while the rear features a cement rendered wallhead stack.
