Description
Forth House, located at 10 Seaside Place in Aberdour, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is a three-storey and attic, three-bay rectangular-plan tenement featuring a rear square-plan stair tower. The building is rendered and painted at the ground level, with painted stone window surrounds, raised ashlar vertical margins, and an eaves course.
The southeast elevation presents a symmetrical façade with a centrally located door that has a painted surround and a lintel, topped by a corniced hoodmould above a fanlight. Flanking windows are positioned in the outer bays, with the first and second-floor windows aligned above the ground floor openings.
On the southwest elevation, there are windows at the ground floor on the left and right sides. The northwest rear elevation is adjacent to a steep bank that rises to the northwest. An advanced central stair tower extends above the eaves level, with stores at the ground floor level accessible from both the right and left returns. The stair tower features a central door on its northwest elevation, with two single windows above set at mid-levels. There is a small, later timber glazed lean-to on the right return, along with small single windows below the eaves on both the right and left returns. The ground, first, and second floors have flanking windows set in the outer bays, with narrow windows inserted into the left bay close to the stair tower on the first and second floors.
The northeast elevation consists of a plain gable wall with a boarded-up door. The glazing varies; on the southeast elevation, there are plate glass timber sash and case windows at the ground, first floor, and attic levels, while the second floor features 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The northwest elevation has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The building is topped with pitched slate roofs, raised coped ashlar skews, and coped gable apex stacks with circular clay cans. Additionally, there are three-light canted dormer windows in the outer bays of both the front and rear elevations, along with centrally located rooflights on the southeast side.
