Description

Seabank House Hotel is a large, classical villa built in 1831 for Thomas Hamilton. It is situated in Aberdour and is constructed of squared, tooled stone with an ashlar base course, band course and eaves course. The building is rectangular in plan, with two stories and a basement.

The principal, northeast elevation is symmetrical and features a prominent, single-story Doric portico with three steps leading to a raised platform. The portico has paired columns and pilasters supporting a corniced entablature, and a recessed entrance door. Flanking the portico are full-height windows at ground level, with the window on the left being blind. The ground floor windows have sloping hood moulds supported by stylized console brackets with drop pendants. The first floor windows have panelled aprons, arranged above the ground floor openings, with the left window blind.

The southeast, garden elevation is symmetrical and three stories high with four bays and windows in each bay. The basement has evenly spaced windows, with the window on the left being blind and the others protected by iron bars. The “piano nobile” (main floor) windows have hood moulds similar to those on the northeast elevation. First floor windows feature panelled aprons.

The southwest elevation has a double-height bowed window occupying the third bay at both basement and ground floor levels. The basement has a door to the left, a central window, and a window to the bowed bay, with iron bars on the windows. The ground floor has a window to the left and centre, with three “piano nobile” windows to the bow. Three evenly spaced windows are positioned on the first floor, above the ground floor windows, with the right window blind.

On the northwest elevation, there’s a basement well to the left, a window in the centre, and a door to the right. A modern, lean-to addition is located off-centre to the right, with an inserted window on the far left at ground floor level. There is a single-bay, stugged ashlar outshot with a flat roof to the far right. A tall, centred rectangular stair window is positioned on the first floor, accompanied by a small inserted window above.

The front door is timber-panelled with inserted upper glass panels and a letterbox fanlight. Most windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The overhanging eaves have exposed brackets, and the roof is piended, covered with grey slate. A central platform features a cluster of sixteen polygonal stone cans.

The interior includes pilasters and cornicing in the vestibule, a stone flag floor, and a narrow arched roof over a corridor leading to the main hall. Doorways have panelled architraves with carved roundels in the upper corners, and there are timber-panelled doors throughout. The drawing room features an original white marble fireplace, a large bow window to the southwest, detailed cornicing with anthemion and honeysuckle motifs. The dining room has an original black marble fireplace, detailed cornicing and a rinceau motif. A wide dogleg stair rises to the first floor, with painted cast-iron decorative balusters and a timber handrail. The stair window is geometric, with coloured glass.

Random rubble boundary walls enclose the house and its grounds.
