Description
Early 1820s in date, with alterations in the late 20th century, Seaside House is a basement and two-storey, three-bay rectangular house. The principal, or north-west, elevation is faced with droved ashlar, featuring a base course, a band course between the floors, an eaves cornice, and a small parapet with a raised central section. The rear, or south-east, elevation is of coursed grey sandstone with raised margins, long and short surrounds to the openings, quoins, and an eaves course with a cornice. Random rubble is used on the gables.
The symmetrical north-west elevation has a centrally positioned basement entrance flanked by windows. Two steps lead to a landing across the basement well, providing access to the main entrance, which features a doorpiece with narrow pilasters and an entablature, tall flanking windows, and a fanlight with scalloped astragals. Three smaller windows are positioned close to the eaves above the corresponding openings on the ground floor. An advanced gate entrance is located to the left, and a converted storeroom projects to the right.
The north-east elevation includes a raised store at basement level and a plain, reconditioned gable wall. The south-east elevation is also symmetrical, with timber steps leading to the first floor, flanking basement windows near the ground, a full-length ground floor window in the centre, a timber balcony to the left, and tall flanking windows. Smaller windows are located close to the eaves above the ground floor openings. A ground and first-floor window are positioned on the south-west elevation, alongside an advanced converted storeroom to the basement with a brick lean-to addition above.
The house has timber panelled doors to the basement and ground floor. Timber sash and case windows are present throughout, with 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and 8-pane sashes in the basement and first floor. A centrally located ground floor rear window incorporates a small timber, two-leaf panel section below the glazing, which opens with the sash window to create a door. The roof is piended and covered with grey slates. Swept, shouldered wallhead replacement stacks are located to the north-east and south-west, topped with polygonal cans.
The basement has been modernised. The ground floor features three arches in the hallway along the south-west wall. A slightly recessed doorpiece leads to the drawing-room in the left arch, and an open arch leads to the stairwell to the right. A further slightly recessed doorpiece, with a fanlight featuring scalloped astragals, is positioned in the centre arch. The drawing-room, located to the east, retains an original marble fireplace, decorative cornicing, and panelled shutters to the windows. The rectangular dining room to the south has a pilastered buffet recess to the north-west wall, decorative cornicing, and panelled shutters to the windows. The stairwell is set against a window in the third bay of the north-west elevation. The first-floor rooms have coomed ceilings.
Original decorative iron railings with fleur-de-lys baluster heads are present on the north-west elevation.
